Dear Sallie Mae:

Dear Sallie Mae:
19 years ago I was a college freshman with no way of paying for college without you.   Ever since I was in 8th grade I wanted to be a high school history teacher.  I signed on the dotted line and pursued that dream.

I approached graduation, did my student teaching and realized I didn't want to teach.  I stumbled along for a few years, trying to figure out what I wanted to do when I "grew up" and not being able to afford food at times.  Eventually I got married, became a mom and decided to stay at home with my kids, sacrificing a paycheck.

In just a few short years my husband went from being a single guy, with a good job to being a husband and a father supporting a family of 4.  Among the things he took on was my payment to you each month, while I stayed home with our kids.
Well . . . 19 years after I signed on the dotted line and walked on to that college campus it's time to say GOOD BYE.

This is the end, Sallie.   I know there are other former college students you're still hounding, but as for me . . . we're done.   It's you.  It's me.  It's OVER!

I've paid you off and am not looking back.  My husband tells me I'm taking too much joy in our breakup.  My husband says girls are "soooooo much meaner" than guys about dumping someone.  The thing is, you've been the "other woman" in our relationship since before we met.  He has paid you when I couldn't. Since we got married we've paid you out of his paycheck.

I don't know many people who would be ok with another woman in their marriage and well . . . that's what you've been.

We've sacrificed dinners out, date nights and family vacations because you were hanging around, but now you're not welcome here any more.

We have nothing tying us to you and we're thankful.

For the first time in our married life you aren't part of our relationship and that's a GOOD thing.
Goodbye Sallie! We're D.O.N.E. and there's no possible way we're getting back together.

-Heidi

  1. Hurray!! I paid off my law school loan recently, too. Debt free is awesome. We're working on the house, now. By our calculations, we should have it paid off in 6 or 7 years. Have you done the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace program? We did it through our church and it was very informative.

Haven't read too many blogs lately. Hope you and your family are well.

    1. Yes :) We took FPU a few years ago through our church, but hadn't really been "gazelle intense". That's AWESOME about having the house paid off in just 6-7 years. We're working on the house, but it definitely won't happen that fast for us. Right now our goal is to have ours paid off by 2025 (when our oldest graduates h.s.), but that's going to take several miracles to happen. We'll see what God does! He provided us a huge miracle just a few weeks ago that enabled us to basically leapfrog from BS2 to BS6 instantly. (We never stopped saving for retirement while tackling the other stuff).
